Community Involvement

As a small community we believe that the best way to make a difference in our community isn’t always to reinvent the wheel so we can slap our name on a project, but to throw our energy into good work that is already happening. Here are some of the ways the Dormition community is trying to make a difference in the Hampton Roads community and across the world.

  • St. Maria Skobtsova Community Dinner – Every Thursday evening our sister parish, the Cathedral of the Annunciation, hosts a community dinner for those who may be experiencing food insecurity. This dinner is hosted by a different group every week and members of our parish are actively involved in keeping this excellent ministry going week after week.
  • Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia – Our parish is always collecting food to donate to the local Food Bank.
  • St. Nicholas Uganda Children’s Fund – This ministry provides education, mentoring, and much more to abandoned and orphaned Ugandan children. We are proud to support and promote the work of Peter and Sharon Georges, the founders of St. Nicholas Uganda Children’s Fund!

In addition to specific programs above we also do our best to take care of each other. Within the parish people sometimes experience a season of need or difficulty due to unpredictable circumstances of life or health. We do our best, with the resources we have, to meet those needs and keep everyone in our parish family safe and well.
